The Secret Harmony Book Cover

The Secret Harmony

A fantasy novel of Harmonic Magic, forbidden knowledge, and the battle against corruption.

In the forested world of I'lyr, all power flows through Harmony — the music that shapes the living world. Iris Evershade knows more about its theory than anyone at the Arbory of Elm, even her instructors. Year after year, the simplest melody falls apart the moment she sings it.

Then a woman she never knew dies — a great-aunt, hidden away, erased from every record — and leaves her an abandoned cottage at the edge of nowhere and a mysterious journal written in words no living person can read. What the cottage hides is an ancient secret banned for so long it has been forgotten.

But it's not the only thing waiting for her. Her great-aunt released something that was locked away in the silence between the harmonies. It offers Iris the one thing she has wanted her whole life: to belong so completely she will never feel broken again. She has only to stop fighting and let go.

When Iris discovers what it truly wants, she realizes she is the only person alive who can banish it again. The only acolyte in eons, trained by failures in the field — she has to become enough. And to do that, she has to stop believing the lie she has carried since she was small: that something inside her was broken beyond fixing.

The girl who only ever asked questions must become the answer. And the one song she was never taught is the one she cannot sing alone.

Meet the Characters

Iris Evershade

She understands the theory of Harmony better than anyone at the Arbory of Elm — and cannot sing the simplest melody without it unraveling in her hands. Iris has spent her life believing she is broken. Her almond-shaped eyes shift between green and gray, her voice carries overtones she never means to make, and she answers questions no one has spoken aloud. What her instructors read as failure is something they have forgotten how to name: the connective Harmony that once bridged every tradition, waiting in the boundaries between them for the one lyral who can hear it.

Laurel Silverbrook

Iris's closest friend, with auburn hair that falls in thick waves against deep walnut skin — a coloring that once made her a target and now turns every head in a room. Warm, quick, and effortlessly disarming, Laurel names a feeling before others notice they have it. But the easy charm is a craft she honed against childhood cruelty, and beneath it lives a mind no one has been allowed to see: three years of private harmonic study locked in a chest she has shown to no one. Her loyalty to Iris is unshakable. Her own power is only beginning to surface.

Reed Mistwater

The tallest and quietest of Iris's circle, Reed carries his strength with deliberate gentleness, letting others speak first so his rare words land with weight. He learned healing at his dying grandmother's side years before he entered the Arbory, and he treats Harmony as a way to ease suffering rather than a subject to master. His knowledge of the marsh traditions and Wild Harmonies runs deeper than the formal schools allow. He pours what he feels for Iris into quiet acts — a found text, a gift left without a note — long before he finds the courage to say it aloud.

Rowan Emberfall

An Elder of the Arbory of Ash who trusts only what he can measure. After detecting an impossibility from the remote Northlands, Rowan turns his relentless analytical gaze on Iris. His voice carries the crystalline edge of Ash mastery, his praise rare and clipped. What begins as cold investigation hardens into confrontation, then bends toward an uneasy alliance, as the most rigorous mind in I'lyr confronts truths that lie beyond the reach of measurement.

Linnea Brightwillow

An Elder of the Arbory of Elm whose measured grace and layered wisdom have made her one of the most revered voices in I'lyr. Linnea believes the Harmonies were tragically fractured long ago, and that she alone carries the intellect and dedication to make them whole again. Every word she speaks works on more than one level; her warmth runs deep, and so does the pride beneath it. She would sacrifice anything to restore the order she reveres — and it is precisely her virtues that make her the most dangerous person Iris will ever face.

Alder Nightwind

A wandering herbalist with weathered clothes, an easy manner, and a talent for asking small questions that draw out large answers. Alder is none of what he appears: an independent operative hired to watch Iris, a man who surrenders information by the drop and gathers it by the flood. He prizes knowledge and his own freedom above every cause and every person — or so he insists. Neither villain nor hero, he plays each side for advantage, until the evidence of Iris's character begins to compel the one thing he has spent a lifetime avoiding: belief in something beyond himself.
